Palavas: A mixture of old and modern, something to suit everyone!
Palavas has a beautiful sandy beach, and the flat is only 1 minute away from it!
Palavas has been a popular destination since almost a century ago.
You can enjoy the fishing town around the canalized River Lez. Palavas is also busy and modern with lots of restaurants and shops.

Palavas is situated right between the Mediterranean Sea and the lagoons (étangs). You can sunbathe and swim and enjoy water-sports or just go for a bird-watching trip and see all the pink flamingos (Contact the tourist office for tours).

Festivals in Palavas:
2nd Sunday in July: Fete de la mer, religious procession and blessing of fishing boats, jousting, fireworks and tauromachie.
14th July: Night-time joute and fireworks.
29th September - 1st October : Feria d'automne. Local camargais-style festival, horses and bulls (Contact +33 6 61 46 68 85)

Where to eat
Le Phare de la Méditerranée: The most outstanding restaurant in Palavas is a converted water tower that rotates very slowly to give you a beautiful panoramic view of the area - go early evening to see it both in light and when it is lit up at night. The menu contains mostly fish dishes. There is also a bar.

Museums in Palavas:
Musée Albert Dubout, satirical caricatures, local artist.
Musée du train, steam locomotive.

Palavas, West, Cathedral (1100s) Roman style, on the isthmus of Maguelone.

Montpellier
Montpellier is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon région. About 12 km from Palavas. It has a young and dynamic university culture.
Artistic festivals and events:
- Mid-June/mid-July theatre, dance and music. Festival in Chateau d'O (+33 4 67 01 04 04)
- Danse festival (info@montpellierdanse.com)
- Music festival, many free concerts, jazz, classical, etc. (+33 4 67 02 02 01)

Beautiful architecture:
- place de la comédie, morning market place, lively area.
- Citadel (1622)
- Le Corum, opera house, pink granite building, beautiful view of the old city from the terrace.
- Walk in all the small streets to see all the mansions, hotels and squares. Facades : Roman-style, fourteenth century, neoclassical, Doric, etc.
- Cathedral.
- Jardin des plantes (1593), plant specimens from tropical to temperate (free)
- Antigone, very modern new area.

Excellent nightlife: bars, clubs and live music which you will no doubt discover!

Lunel:
Lunel is the Petite Camargue. Not far from the ruins of Roman Ambussum.
Also lively tradition of tauromachie.

Sete:
About 12 km from Palavas, cross the canal maritime to arrive at the colourful old quarter. Historical centre; canal Royal.
See water-jousting tournament, especially on August the 25th, fête de Saint Louis, and also fireworks and medieval pageantry.
First weekend in July : fête de la Saint Pierre. Traditional fishermen's festival with religious procession, street party and jousting.
July: Mediterranean music festival (folk and pop)
End of July: Fiesta Latina. Four-day celebration!

Bassin de Thau:
One of the biggest salt lakes in Languedoc. Little villages, some with medieval walls. Fishing villages. Oysters!

Mèze:
Ancient fishing hamlet.

Arts and crafts, market centre.

Lac Salagou:
Réservoir, see bird life.

Grotte des Demoiselles:
Vast cavern, huge stalactites and stalagmites.
Canoe trip.

Cirque de Mourèze:
Amazing mountains!

Hiking

St Guilhiem-le-Désert:
Hamlet. Tourtuous canyon. Monastery, pilgrimage. Unesco World Heritage Site.
Hike.

Montpellier actively promotes cycling, city paths but also comprehensive networks linking rural areas.
Good news: Ferries take bikes free of charge! (Or a maximum £5 one way), so do British Airways and Air France (please contact airlines first).
